Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami became the 44th President of the SGPC

AMRITSAR: Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami was today elected President of  mini  Parliament  of  Sikhs; the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) during its annual general meeting held at its headquarters here at Teja Singh Samundari Hall within  Golden  Temple  complex. He has become the 44th president of the Shiromani Committee.

During the session held in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib . Surjit Singh Bhitewad nominated Advocate Harjinder Singh for the presidency, which was seconded by Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka and Majid Ravinder Singh Khalsa did. Meanwhile, Amrik Singh Shahpur Mithu Singh Kahneke was nominated for the post of President, which was won by Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami. 

Out of the total 142 votes polled, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami got 122 votes and S. Mithu Singh Kahneke got 19 votes while 1 vote was rejected.


During the general session. Raghujit Singh Virk was elected Senior Vice President. Presented by Baljit Singh Jalal Usman. Gurmeet Singh Booh and Tayed Majeed  Performed by Ravinder Singh Khalsa. 


Similarly, Principal Surinder Singh was elected as the Junior Vice President. His name is  Presented by Sukhpreet Singh Rode, seconded by Bhai Amarjit Singh Chawla and Majid  Nirmal Singh Hariau did. As General Secretary Karnail Singh Panjoli was elected. 

Mr. Panjoli's name is Presented by Daljit Singh Bhinder. Ajmer Singh Khera and Majid  Performed by Avtar Singh Riya. Although the General Secretary was elected by ballot, Mr. Karnail Singh Panjoli won with 112 votes. Mr. Standing against Panjoli. Gurpreet Singh could get only 21 votes. Out of the votes cast for General Secretary, 1 vote was canceled.

After becoming the President of the Shiromani Committee, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami and other elected office bearers paid obeisance at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib and thanked Guru Sahib, where he was conferred the title of Guru by Chief Granthi Singh Sahib Giani Jagtar Singh. He also went to Sri Akal Takht Sahib to thank Guru Sahib.

Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the newly elected President of the Shiromani Committee, has been associated with the Shiromani Committee for a long time.

He has also been the General Secretary of the Shiromani Committee. Last year, Advocate Dhami was appointed by the General House as the Honorary Chief Secretary of the Shiromani Committee. Born in 1956.

 Harjinder Singh Dhami holds BA, LLB. For the last 40 years, he has been involved in the legal profession and has been fighting the cases of Sikh warriors. 

He became a member for the first time in 1996 and has been a member since then. Advocate Dhami has a deep grasp on Sikh issues and is known as a devout religious leader.

He has always contributed by giving better opinions and suggestions to elevate the position and direction of the Shiromani Committee. 

Advocate Dhami, who has been working in the Sikh body for the last one year from the administrative point of view, has maintained warm relations with various Sikh organizations besides improving the management of Gurdwaras, keeping the educational institutions up to date.

Eleven Interim Committee members were elected during the General Session. Among the intimate members is  Surjit Singh Kang,   Sarwan Singh Kular, Surjit Singh Garhi,   Jarnail Singh Dogranwala, Balwinder Singh Weinpuin, Harjap Singh Sultanwind, . Gurinderpal Singh Gora, . Amarjit Singh Bandala, Bibi Gurpreet Kaur,   Jodh Singh Samra, Baba Gurpreet Singh were included.

Giani Jagtar Singh, Head Granthi  of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Giani Ranjit Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Patna Sahib. Gowher Muskin and other prominent personalities were present.

 At the commencement of the session Ardas was offered by Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh and the Holy Hukamnama was recited by Chief Granthi Giani Jagtar Singh. 

At the conclusion of the General Session, Giani Jagtar Singh, Giani Harpreet Singh and Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh conferred Guru Blessings on the newly elected office bearers including the newly elected President Advocate of the SGPC Harjinder Singh Dhami. Former President Bibi Jagir Kaur and her office bearers were also felicitated.

 Bibi Jagir Kaur congratulated the newly elected President and office bearers and thanked the members of the House. Earlier, the proceedings of the House were inaugurated by Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami as the Honorary Chief Secretary.

Speaking to the press after being elected as the President of the SGPC, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that besides expediting the ongoing Dharam Prachar movement, health and education would also be given a new direction as per the present times. He said that SGPC was a common body of all and every Sikh should be a partner in its work. Advocate Dhami said that the service and work of the President of the SGPC was a huge responsibility and he would seek the support of the Sangat to carry it out. He said that there was a code of conduct of the General House of the Shiromani Akali Dal but it was unfortunate that the members of the opposition were rioting forgetting the honor of Guru Sahib. "We strongly condemn the violation of maryada in the presence of Guru Sahib, as it has no place in the Guru's aspirations as well as in the social aspirations, " he said. 

He said that any issue could be considered but it was unfortunate that instead of deliberation, the atmosphere was deliberately spoiled by the opposition. 

He said that some important resolutions brought in the General House by some of these members could not be read as they had spoiled the atmosphere. 

He said that it was the supreme house of the Sikh community and the demand raised from here was of great significance but when some political interests do not allow the environment to be created here, it harms the entire community. He said that those who spoil the atmosphere for the sake of protest should take fatwa in the sangat. 

Advocate Dhami thanked Guru Sahib for electing him as President and also patronized the Shiromani Akali Dal. Parkash Singh Badal, party president. He thanked Sukhbir Singh Badal, senior Akali leaders and all the members of the Shiromani Committee.

143 members of the Shiromani Committee were present during the election session of the President and other office bearers.
